About The Role

Are you a Life Changer? Do you want to lean in and transform the life of a child?

Compass Community puts children first through our therapeutic, innovative approach. Integrity, Courage and Care shape how we work. We listen deeply, challenge each other and fix what needs fixing, together.

We are looking for qualified teachers specialising in English, Mathematics or Science to help shape Compass Community Online School: a relationship-centred provision supporting young people to reconnect with education.

This is the work. And we’d like you to be part of it.

Who we are

Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds and experience barriers to accessing education. Many have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH), alongside other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), such as autism, ADHD and communication difficulties.

Some have experienced significant disruption to their education. Others may find attending school overwhelming or need a carefully planned bridge back into a school setting.

CCOS provides personalised online education that starts with understanding the child. Through consistent relationships, accessible teaching and a therapeutic approach, we help young people rebuild confidence, develop routines and make meaningful academic and personal progress.

For some, this will be their main education provision. For others, we will work alongside their existing school to support reintegration through a blended package.

As a trauma and attachment informed organisation, we provide extensive therapeutic training and support. Our approach places the child at the centre of decision making, bringing together education and therapy professionals, parents and carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, our students.

The Role

We are all primarily teachers of children before teachers of subjects. Central to this role is knowing the child, building professional, nurturing and positive relationships, and helping students believe that learning is possible for them.

You will deliver live online lessons to individuals and small groups, working closely with higher level teaching assistants to provide teaching that responds to pupils’ needs and starting points. Our planned subject pathways include Key Stage 3, Entry Level, Functional Skills where appropriate, and GCSE.

You will make your subject real and relevant, creating engaging learning opportunities that build on pupils’ interests, address gaps in understanding and provide appropriate challenge.

Teaching online requires creativity, clear communication and an ability to build relationships through a screen. Some pupils may initially participate with their camera off, communicate through the chat or need additional support to attempt a task. You will respond flexibly, establishing predictable routines and high expectations while helping pupils take manageable steps towards fuller participation.

You will:

  • Plan and deliver well-sequenced, accessible lessons in your specialist subject.
  • Assess pupils’ starting points and use this understanding to personalise learning.
  • Work collaboratively with HLTAs to support and extend pupils’ learning.
  • Recognise and celebrate personal progress alongside academic achievement.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement and wellbeing, responding promptly to concerns.
  • Work with families, carers, schools and other professionals to support each pupil’s education.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, resources and the wider opportunities available through CCOS.

As part of a developing provision, you will have a voice in shaping how we work. We welcome teachers who bring ideas, interests and professional curiosity, alongside a willingness to reflect, adapt and grow with the team.

About You

Our children need teachers who offer warmth, consistency, flexibility and a non-judgemental approach. You will remain ambitious for pupils, including when their confidence or engagement is fragile.

You will bring:

  • Qualified Teacher Status or an appropriate recognised teaching qualification.
  • Strong subject knowledge in English, Mathematics or Science.
  • Experience of adapting teaching for children with SEND, including SEMH needs.
  • An understanding of how trauma, anxiety and disrupted education can affect learning and engagement.
  • Confidence using digital tools and a willingness to develop your online teaching practice.
  • Strong organisation and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • A clear commitment to safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare.

Previous online teaching experience is welcome, but strong relationships, inclusive teaching and a willingness to learn are central to this role.

Benefits and Rewards

  • Staff laptop and mobile phone.
  • Competitive salary.
  • Extensive training and professional qualification opportunities.
  • Small teaching groups with specialist HLTA support.
  • The opportunity to help shape a developing online provision.
  • The chance to be part of an expanding national organisation that recognises skill, effort and potential and grows its own leadership teams.
  • Enhanced occupational sickness scheme.
  • Flexible pension.
  • Regular therapeutic and supportive supervision.
  • Employee benefit service with access to wellbeing services, salary sacrifice schemes, high street vouchers and discounts on eating out and takeaways.

We regularly review applications and reserve the right to close an advert early if we identify suitable candidates.

Safeguarding

Compass Community Schools are highly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All staff will be expected to undergo the appropriate enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks and other required pre-employment checks, including due diligence checks relating to social media use.

All staff have responsibility for promoting the safeguarding and welfare of children and must work in accordance with the relevant Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy at all times. At CCOS, this includes recognising and responding to concerns within an online learning environment.

Compass is an equal-opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. As we continue to grow, we know that we need talented employees with diverse backgrounds, cultures, perspectives and experiences to support our children and young people.
